2. Why use Wireless Link instead of regular dial-up connections?

Wireless Link enables business travelers to use their laptops to read and send e-mails, browse the web or access securely their company networks and resources at similar speeds as in normal office networks. Wireless Link users can move freely around the office, hotel, conference centre or any other location covered by the service and stay constantly connected. They can even roam between Wireless Link Powered locations across the globe without ever having to worry about the network cables or changing the network configuration on their laptops.

There are no minute-based connection fees and the connection is on all the time, so there is no need to pay for expensive mobile or long distance calls.

3. What is the difference between standards of 802.11b and 802.11a?

There are many broadband wireless technologies in use today. The most popular are 802.11b and 802.11a. Wireless Link supports 802.11b currently, and will continue to incorporate 802.11a technologies as it becomes widely available.

802.11b (Wi-Fi) and 802.11a (WiFi5) products are not compatible with each other. The main differences are that 802.11b operates in the 2.4Ghz frequency range and has a maximum speed of 11 Mbps. 802.11a operates in the 5Ghz range and has a maximum speed of 54 Mbps. However the speed degrades quickly over distance with 802.11a. The vast majority of products currently in operation use the 802.11b standard.

How do I connect to the Wireless Link Service?

Once you arrived at any Wireless Link Hotspot, turn on your laptop and launch your favourite web browser. The Wireless Link welcome page will appear. Enter your username and password in the fields on the screen as shown in the Prepaid Card.

If you have any problems connecting to the Wireless Link Network, you may need to enter the SSID, also known as the Network Name. To configure this setting, please refer to the User Guide of your Wireless LAN Card and download this document (readable by Microsoft Excel) to get the SSID for your hotspot location. Please enter it exactly as it appears, no space, etc. The Wireless Link provides Zero Configuration Network which does NOT require you to configure your network infrastructure such as DHCP servers, DNS and other administered services, while you will obtain an IP Address dynamically. If your PC's Wireless LAN card has an option to set the Network Type, please select 'Infrastructure Mode'.
